Spring is here! It feels good. In Yoga, the changing of the seasons is honored through the tradition of performing 108 Sun Salutations during each equinox and solstice throughout the year. The Spring Equinox this year was yesterday, March 21st. The Summer Solstice will be June 21st. The Fall Equinox falls on September 23rd and the Winter Solstice is December 22nd. The 108 Sun Salutations signify a time of great change, letting go of the old and opening to the new. This year I most definitely felt the transition of moving from the Winter into the Spring. Most significant changes we go through are not comfortable, yet they are where we awaken most deeply. Opening up to a new experience involves a transformation, in essence, a death or letting go of the old…old ways of thinking, doing or Being to be reborn into the new.

Romans 12:2 Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.

I felt the transition of seasons this year to the fullest. The seasons we move through in Nature are really the seasons, transformations and awakenings of our own Soul. The last couple of weeks leading up to Spring were very emotional for me and I struggled a great deal at times. The other day as I was teaching an awareness came to me. The words “the winter of my discontent” passed through me. Why is it that when we go through challenging times, we wish with all our heart to not have to go through it? Yet, in nature, the bitter and cold winter, is necessary for everything to be reborn and to come into full bloom. It is the ultimate cleanser and renewer.
After teaching yesterday, I received an e-mail from someone in class regarding appreciating adversity. As we come into this new season, let’s remember to be grateful for all that’s come to pass. The winter’s of discontent have served their purpose and will continue to serve their purpose in each of our lives. Instead of shaking our fists at the heavens when we feel a sense of struggle within about anything, maybe it’s possible to grow to a place where we bow our heads and humbly give thanks. This is from his e-mail.
“There’s a bible quote that is often referred to in the Greek Orthodox religion from Paul’s letter to Thessalonians “In all things give thanks.”

Blessings…
